Beginner's Guide to Dildos - Getting your first dildo
Dildo's for Beginners
Sex toy reviewer and guest blogger, Domina, in collaboration with Peepshow Toys, prepared this useful guide on buying your first dildo.
If you're thinking to yourself, I'm buying my first dildo, what do I need to know? Here's some of the most important answers to your questions.
Important Considerations When Choosing Your First Dildo
What are you using the dildo for?
Are you going to use your dildo for vaginal penetration? Anal play? Strap-on sex? Solo masturbation? Dildos have different features which make them better for certain types of sex. For example:
- Flared Base — Great for anal sex and strap on sex.
- Suction Cup Base — Perfect for solo sex as you can adhere it to a chair or wall.
- Curved Shaft — Excellent for G-spot pleasure especially if your dildo has a large, bulbous head.
- Double dildo / double-ended — Fun to share with a partner for mutual masturbation.
- Realistic — Made of softer, skin-like materials for a real feel and look.
- Hollow — Also called extensions , these are for men who want to add length and girth to their penis size. These are also great for men with ED.
- Bendable — Good for prostate of G-spot play as well as versatile.
- Waterproof — Great for the shower, bath or hot tub.
- Vibrating — Essentially a dildo that vibrates (also known as a vibrator) for additional stimulation and pleasure.
- Strap-ons — Strap ons are for pegging or female to female sex, and usually need to be worn with a harness. Although some can be worn without a harness .
Materials?
Material is very important when you are choosing a dildo. Do you want soft or hard? Realistic, or non-phallic?
- Silicone — Silicone is the ultimate sex toy material. It is soft, yet firm, 100% body safe, non-porous, hypoallergenic and is the only soft material that can be sterilized. Avoid materials like jelly, PVC, TPR, rubber, or cyberskin.
- ABS Plastic — Body safe, ABS plastic is a popular material for vibrators and used to be used a lot in dildos, but not so much now. It is very firm and not flexible, probably best kept for vibrating dildos as plastic resonates vibrations very well.
- Glass and Ceramic — Glass toys are non-porous, hypoallergenic and 100% body safe. They are very decorative and make great collectables. Because they are super firm, they also make great G-spot toys. Borosilicate (Pyrex type) glass can be boiled for up to 5 minutes to disinfect.
- Metal and Wood —These materials make for great sex toys as they are body safe as well. Most wooden toys are sealed with a special coating to make them non-porous and body-safe. Metal toys are non-porous naturally.
Size Matters!
Careful consideration should be made when choosing the size of your dildo. If you are a beginner, start small and work your way up. The average penis size is 4” while the average dildo size is 7”. So start somewhere in that range. There are also extra large dildos, up to 10-17 inches in length, for those who like them big.
Soft or Hard?
You will want to choose a dildo that is both comfortable to use (softness) and yet firm enough for penetration. There are some dildos that are just made for packing and are super limp, so those are no good for penetration. For G-spot pleasure, a firm dildo is needed, so firm silicone or hard glass is ideal.
Texture?
Are you looking for smooth as silk, or lumpy, bumpy, ridged or swirled for extra stimulation? Some people enjoy a bumpy texture while others do not. Your best bet is to get a smooth dildo to try first, and then you can experiment with a textured sleeve to see if you like.
Price?
Prices of sex toys vary widely, depending on the quality, material, and craftsmanship of the toy. The higher the prices, usually the better the quality, and the longer your toy will last.
