Important Considerations When Choosing Your First Dildo

What are you using the dildo for?

Are you going to use your dildo for vaginal penetration? Anal play? Strap-on sex? Solo masturbation? Dildos have different features which make them better for certain types of sex. For example:

• Flared Base — Great for anal sex and strap on sex.
• Suction Cup Base — Perfect for solo sex as you can adhere it to a chair or wall.

Materials?

Material is very important when you are choosing a dildo. Do you want soft or hard? Realistic, or non-phallic?

• Silicone — Silicone is the ultimate sex toy material. It is soft, yet firm, 100% body safe, non-porous, hypoallergenic and is the only soft material that can be sterilized. Avoid materials like jelly, PVC, TPR, rubber, or cyberskin.
• ABS Plastic — Body safe, ABS plastic is a popular material for vibrators and used to be used a lot in dildos, but not so much now. It is very firm and not flexible, probably best kept for vibrating dildos as plastic resonates vibrations very well.
• Glass and Ceramic — Glass toys are non-porous, hypoallergenic and 100% body safe. They are very decorative and make great collectables. Because they are super firm, they also make great G-spot toys. Borosilicate (Pyrex type) glass can be boiled for up to 5 minutes to disinfect.
• Metal and Wood —These materials make for great sex toys as they are body safe as well. Most wooden toys are sealed with a special coating to make them non-porous and body-safe. Metal toys are non-porous naturally.

Size Matters!

Careful consideration should be made when choosing the size of your dildo. If you are a beginner, start small and work your way up. The average penis size is 4” while the average dildo size is 7”. So start somewhere in that range. There are also extra large dildos, up to 10-17 inches in length, for those who like them big.

Soft or Hard?

You will want to choose a dildo that is both comfortable to use (softness) and yet firm enough for penetration. There are some dildos that are just made for packing and are super limp, so those are no good for penetration. For G-spot pleasure, a firm dildo is needed, so firm silicone or hard glass is ideal.

Texture?
